This digital teacher instructs girl and boy band wannabes in learning K-pop dance choreography.
K-pop dances are notoriously synchronized and intensely choreographed, which means that they can be hard for the average at-home dancer. Luckily, scientists at the Pohang University of Science and Technology have developed a virtual teacher to help everyone realize their K-pop dance dreams.
The researchers studied the movements of amateur versus professional dancers using 3D tracking of 15 joints in the human body. They then developed a program in which K-pop dance learners follow along with the movements of a virtual, on-screen teacher. When the student's moves differ from that of the teacher, the body part in which the discrepancy occurs lights up on the screen -- so the aspiring K-pop dancer knows exactly which aspect of the move to adjust.
