Juxtaposed Cliffside Homes

'Klein House' Pushes Up Against a Natural Rock Face

As if challenging nature itself, Klein House, a home in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, is pushed right up to the edge of a natural rock face. Considering the difficulty that such a property posed for MHNDU, the architecture studio behind the project, it isn't all too surprising that the home's design looks to be a further denunciation of the limitations imposed by nature. The home is built from smooth concrete, rigidly straight lines, and regular angles, making it contrast starkly against the cliff that towers over it.

While the home is in part a statement against nature, it's also explicitly designed to recognize the beauty of the environment. The large property has an end-to-end balcony that offers a panoramic view of the Sydney Harbor and the Pacific Ocean beyond.
