5G-Connected Train Systems

KDDI and Samsung Plan to Launch a 5G Train in Japan By 2020

Japanese telecommunications label KDDI worked in partnership with South Korean tech company Samsung on the successful conduction of a 5G train test. The two plan to launch 5G by 2020 on train systems, solving the issue of poor bandwidth speeds on railways. The test took place on a train in motion traveling between two stations at a distance of one mile. After the test's completion, KDDI and Samsung came to the successful conclusion of a downlink and uplink handover at the moving speed of over 60 miles an hour.

To measure the connectivity, KDDI and Samsung downloaded an 8K video and uploaded a 4K video using the router onboard. The implementation of 5G connections will enable a boosted bandwidth range for both passengers and train operators. This will allow improved passenger satisfaction, information, security and analytics.
