Photoreal Wooden Wildlife

Julie Bender Renders Animals with Camera-Like Precision Using Heat

Wood-burning illustrations and photorealistic renderings of animals aren’t new concepts on their own, but Julie Bender has merged these two highly technical art forms to create these astonishing depictions of wildlife. The detail of each animal’s fur or reptilian skin is just remarkable, and it no doubt took Bender extended periods of time to complete these images that look as though someone printed a photograph onto planks of wood.

Julie Bender describes the process she uses to create these illustrations on her personal website. She explains that modern day pyrography, which is the art of wood burning, uses solder-like machines to carefully ignite portions of the wood in order to darken it. Though she educates visitors on how to paint with heat, she can’t, however, magically instil her talent for photoreal rendering onto fans.
