In an entry for the Young Designers Contest that took place during the 2014 IMM Cologne Fair, designer and artist Tsuyoshi Hayashi created a furniture series that is Japanese tile-inspired. The designer used tiles that have been thrown in the waste and made furniture that feature the recycled use of reclaimed Japanese tiles called the Kawara Bench.
Hayashi has managed to create a modular system that manages to preserve the rugged nature of the tiles through using smooth curves that result in an ergonomic structure that hints at the traditional Japanese roofs with an added touch of sustainable design.
The series of bar stools and benches uses the repurposed waste to accentuate the structure and visual aesthetics. The structure is composed of a simple wooden frame and can be detached from a bench to a stool.
