Grande Gotham Art Projects

James Gulliver Hancock Draws Every Building in NYC

Australian-born, Brooklyn-based illustrator James Gulliver Hancock has committed himself to a grande and ambitious project; he plans on drawing every building in New York City. Such a feat is obviously a huge undertaking. The City That Never Sleeps is also one of the biggest in the world, being home to millions of people and thousands of buildings. This is not a project that can be accomplished overnight. Still, the artist is well into his work and what he has produced so far is promising.

The illustrations are rendered in vibrant pastel colors and (deliberately) not-quite-straight lines that lend Gotham city a whimsical, light-hearted feeling that is too often lost in crowded subways and rush hour traffic. It will be interesting to see the diversity of New York’s architecture as portrayed by an artist with such a sense of levity and curiosity.
