Anything made out of stained glass is going to gain looks of admiration, but when it is a sculpture of a crab the size of a small car, it's going to drop a lot of jaws; that is the reaction artist Jackie Leatherbury Douglass received with her sculpture. Since the Chesapeake blue crab is a symbol of Maryland, it is only natural that the county wanted to commission something spectacular as a tribute. Jackie Leatherbury Douglass delivered.
Hailing from Shady Side herself, Jackie Leatherbury Douglass created a monstrous crab. Although she reveals that the county impossibly wanted a 30-foot crab, she still stunned them with a three-dimensional 10 by seven by five and a half foot blue sculpture that took more than 5,500 hours to assemble. Thankfully she had help welding the frame.
