Peter Rose + Partners have designed the 'Island House,' a family residence located in Edgartown, Massachusetts.
The home is comprised of four structures -- a main residence, garage, storage shed and boat house -- all nestled onto the Chappaquiddick island. The architects designed the project to have as minimal an effect on the environment as possible, as well as a small visual impact. The home's exterior is made from unpainted wood that's intended to weather over time, blending it into the surrounding landscape. The main house offers incredible views of Nantucket and the Cape Pogue Bay from the east, and of the ocean and Edgartown from the west.
In terms of environmental impact, the house utilizes a rigid insulation system and calibrated window openings that encourage natural ventilation, reducing the cost of regulating the interior temperature. The green roof, which is covered in sea grasses, also serves to provide greater thermal performance and insulation.
