The aircraft is powered by a turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) engine that makes use of the GE J85 turbojet engine when launching and landing. The aircraft would be capable of reaching a top speed of Mach 5.5, which equals to 4,219mph.
The Hermeus Quarterhorse hypersonic aircraft has already been funded thanks to a partnership with the U.S. Air Force and will see testing starting in 2023. A cargo-only version would then be next in line for 2025 before finally resulting in a larger commercial passenger version in 2029.
