Egg-Shaped Interiors

House I Hides Rounded Rooms Behind Rectilinear Exterior Walls

Looking at the polygonal House I from the street might cause you to expect triangulated spaces inside of it. You might be surprised then to see that the interior of this dwelling is shaped by the convergence of many arches, creating a domed void in the center.

Hiroyuki Shinozaki Architects designed this single-family home in Tochigi, Japan, to fit within an unusually shaped plot. Many flat facades offered plenty of opportunities for the installation of windows, bringing natural light in from all angles. An open-plan arrangement was adopted to highlight the core of the dynamic domicile will spacious atrium. All domestic activities overlap under the great vaulting of the House I to bring the occupants a sense of togetherness as they cook, work, play and rest.
