The Hornsby Park Southern Lookout is a 42-metre weathering steel platform designed by AJC Architects in collaboration with Clouston Associates, situated on the northern edge of Sydney overlooking Hornsby Quarry. The structure is anchored into the embankment and balanced on four angled columns converging on a single central footing, a configuration chosen to minimize ground disturbance on the sensitive slope. The entrance is framed by steel portals and gabion stone walls. Hornsby Quarry operated for over a century as an industrial site with no public access before the broader regeneration effort began.
The Southern Lookout is the first completed phase of a 60-hectare landscape masterplan for the former quarry site, developed in partnership with Hornsby Shire Council. Weathering steel, commonly known as Cor-Ten, forms a stable oxidized surface layer that protects the steel beneath while producing a warm amber-brown tone that changes in appearance over time.
