Horizontally Functioning Chimneys

This Horizontal Chimney Flue is Decorated With Intricate Tiles

The Buffalo cafe, a cafe in upstate New York, is using an innovative horizontal chimney flue to keep its customers cozy. The horizontal shape of the flue makes it possible for it to be used as a bench, while the engineering enables it to be heated for 24 hours on a single, hour-long burn.

The horizontal chimney flue chamber is 4.6 meters long and split lengthwise, with hot smoke drawn out of the heater and along one side of the chamber to the far end before being sucked back down to the stove-end. This system means no other heating or cooling systems are required, with skylights allowing warm air out in the summer and large folding windows letting fresh air in. The flue chamber is made from refractory cement and is decorated with intricate cement tiles, making it pleasing to look at.

This chimney flue shows that innovative engineering, aesthetics and sustainability can indeed go in hand.
