Hopper Beer Packaging Manages a Contemporary Image with Traditional Roots

The initial impression expressed by the look of Hopper Beer packaging seems to be quite modern and eye-catching, yet an explanation from the designer establishes that the graphic scheme references quite a distant history. The premium Belgian beer within it has been brewed since the 1400s by Monks in Flemish Brabant using a stock of local hops that are remarkably distinctive.

To allude to this background, designer Vicky S. Y. Kan tailored the label to mimic a graceful pointed arch in gold paper. Further subtle detail was applied, perhaps to resemble stain glass construction, but appearing more modern and geometric. The name of the brand is placed clearly across each bottle in a contemporary lowercase typeface, but this aspect of Hopper Beer packaging incorporates flower-like rounded cross motifs that you'd find in the gables of old churches.
