Gems Glow Different Colors

Hope Diamond Is Red Under UV Light

The Hope Diamond is being used to fingerprint blue diamonds allowing scientists to identify the genuine ones from the artificial. While most blue diamonds continue to glowblue when placed under ultraviolet light, the Hope Diamond glows red. Research was conducted at the Smithsonian and Naval Research Laboratory and the findings are reported in the Geology journal.

Implications - During the recession, lab-grown and synthetic diamonds rose in popularity as an affordable alternative to mined diamonds. Accordingly, natural diamonds have risen in exclusivity. Since many lab-grown diamonds are nearly impossible to discern from natural diamonds, researchers are hoping to create tests to differentiate the two and enable jewelers to appraise fine diamonds more accurately.
