Hearvana AI Develops Sound Bubble Headphones For Targeted Listening

Hearvana AI is prototyping a new class of AI-driven headphones that create personalized "sound bubbles" for the wearer. Cofounded by University of Washington professor, Shyam Gollakota and his students, the startup focuses on semantic hearing, where the system understands and filters specific everyday sounds instead of bluntly canceling all noise.

The early on-ear prototype uses six microphones across the headband and an onboard microcontroller running compact deep learning models. These models are trained to recognize everyday noises such as sirens, vacuum cleaners, birds, or crying babies, and selectively pass or mute them. The sound bubble feature can automatically amplify people at a table in a busy restaurant while pushing ambient chatter down to about 49 decibels, with latency kept to roughly 10 to 20 milliseconds for natural-feeling conversations.
