Haunted Playhouse by Torafu Allows Kids to Interact with Classic Art

Located at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, the Haunted Playhouse by Torafu takes initiative in engaging children with the art world by transforming a gallery space into an interactive installation.

This piece, part of the ‘Ghosts, Underpants and Stars’ exhibit, is both a seemingly normal gallery space and a behind-the-scenes chamber. The portraiture hung on the walls depict famous pieces like La Giaconda that appear to transform before the viewer's eyes. This 'haunted' gallery is in the control of visiting children as the back chamber allows them to play with what is seen on the outside.

The Haunted Playhouse by Torafu is more than meets the eye in more than one way -it is an excellent museum development initiative. By converting gallery space into a makeshift playground, the museum becomes and inviting institution that peaks curiosity.
