Interactive Musical Vehicles

This Car is Designed to Make Harmonious Sounds Instead of Noise

Designer Marta Santambrogio has created a concept car that will emit harmonious sounds instead of engine noises. While silent cars may seem like the way of the future, an inaudible car would actually be a danger to pedestrians. Santambrogio concluded that if cars could not be completely silent, they should produce music instead of fake engine noises.

In order to test her musical vehicle, Santambrogio took her concept car to India. She then partnered with Delhi musicians to collect music samples from traditional Indian instruments. The car uses these samples to produce a series of harmonious sounds, which she refers to as 'fuzzy logic.' Santambrogio explains that the result of these music samples is an interactive symphony of sounds that helps alert and direct pedestrians.

While she has only tested the concept in India, she believes the same concept could be adapted for different types of infrastructure and different cultural environments.
