Handbag-Inspired Cabinets

The Grand Cabinet Series Opens Like a Giant Purse

The GRAND series of standing cabinets are evocative of ladies handbags, inspired by details like vintage ball clasp closures and rattan of the iconic Palmgren bag.

The brass closures open and close as a clasp on a purse would, offering a playful new way to interact with the furniture. 'Lock' and 'Light' are two pieces from the series, constructed with white lacquered birch and open to reveal interior shelving in pine veneer. The delicacy of the materials give the design lightness and femininity. High quality craftsmanship and the prominent placement of locking mechanisms lends elegance to the simplicity of the rectilinear forms.

This handbag-inspired furniture design is a collaboration between Stockholm designer Mathieu Gustafsson and cabinet maker Niklas Karlsson. GRAND 'Lock' and 'Light' were launched at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2013, and will be displayed again at Milan’s Ventura Lambrate in April 2013.
