Pleated Paper Furniture

The Cabbage Chair

The designers at Nendo amaze me every time they come out with a new idea.

The design of this chair was created for the XXIst Century Man exhibition curated by Issey Miyake for the first anniversary of 21_21 Design Sight in Roppongi, Tokyo. The brief given by Mister Miyake was to make furniture out of the pleated paper used in huge amounts to create the pleated fabric and that was thrown away after its use.

It only needed a roll of this paper product to create the chair; each layer was slit vertically and the resins used in the production process helped giving strength and shape for this chair. It also add elasticity and add comfort to the chair.

The end product looks great and it can be easily recycled.
