These GPS-Enabled Shoes Help Families Keep Track of Elderly Family Members

A Japanese company called 'Yamanashi System Inn Nakagomi' recently launched a line of GPS-enabled shoes that can be used to help people keep track of elderly family members. With countries such as Japan dealing with a rapidly growing population of seniors, this new product demonstrates how IoT can be used to meet the needs of the elderly.

The footwear designed by Yamanashi System Inn Nakagomi consists of comfortable shoes equipped with a small GPS device in each heel. If the person wearing the shoes goes beyond the designated geo-fence perimeter, the device will send a warning message to caretakers and family members. The footwear is also able to send out an alert when the batteries are about to expire.

While the device can be use by anyone, the GPS-enabled footwear is particularly useful for Alzheimer’s patients who have a tendency to become confused and wander off unexpectedly.
