Marcel/a Baltarete's Short Animation Series Alleviates Distress

There are not many options for gender dysphoria therapy out in the world and in the 21st century, we desperately need it in order to help and nurture a big portion of our population. Marcel/a Baltarete—a graduate from the Royal College of Art—has been working on a creative solution. They have launched a series of short animations where they depict themselves as "otherworldly beings to alleviate and interrogate their feelings of gender dysphoria."

For this gender dysphoria therapy project, Marcel/a Baltarete 3D-scanned their head and created a virtual avatar that has been digitally enhanced and animated, morphing and changing. Two short films are titled 'A Journey of Digital Introspection and Relief.' In part one and part two, the designer explores abstraction and their feelings about different gender expressions. Terming the process as therapeutic, Marcel/a Baltarete's work (and others like it) can pave the way to new tools and resources to support gender non-conforming communities.
