London architect Cassion Castle was commissioned by PeasonLloyd founder Tom Lloyd to build a garden studio on his estate in Hampshire, England. The retreat is a multi-purpose space for Lloyd, who needed a garage, studio and storeroom interchangeably. It was also important to Lloyd that the studio complemented the aesthetic of his traditional English cottage, while also incorporating modernist elements.
The architects note, "Tom saw the opportunity to combine architecture and craftsmanship to create something beautiful yet simple." They go on to explain that they wanted to avoid an obvious statement, making it look as though the structure had "always been there." However, upon closer inspection, the modern detailing is more conspicuous.
The finished product features a timber structure supported by a red brick base. The exterior walls are clad in green oak weatherboard that has been purposefully left unfinished.
