Freight Farms Provides a Method of Fresh Produce in Cities

There has been no shortage of urban farming initiatives and concepts, but Freight Farms is one project that offers a refreshing twist on the usual idea of turning things like skyscrapers and rooftops into urban gardens.

Freight Farms, founded by Jon Friedman and Brad McNamara, involves using recycled shipping containers for high-volume crop production, describes PSFK. The designers, who have reached their goal on Kickstarter, will start production of Freight Farms in March. Their design involves the installation of climate control systems into the shipping containers so that crops can be grown during any season. The production is supposed to be self-sustainable and use filtered rainwater, solar power for energy and natural pesticides. Plus, since the containers are stackable, they really can be placed anywhere, creating a sustainable agriculture solution in any urban environment.
