The Fraunhofer IZM Romper Suit Helps Prevent Sudden Infant Death

The Fraunhofer IZM Romper Suit is designed to help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It provides new parents with a way to monitor their newborn's sleep, particularly his or her breathing patterns.

Developed by researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM in Berlin, the Fraunhofer IZM Romper Suit involves a stretchable printed circuit board fashioned out of polyurethane. This discreet circuit board can be embedded into onsies, comfortably hugging the contours of their bodies so as to not create any other problems while alerting parents if their breathing has stopped.

According to scientist Manuel Seckel, the circuit board used in the Fraunhofer IZM Romper Suit can be "manufactured using routine industrial processes, meaning a high throughput and, consequently, good cost-efficiency." Thus, it could be readily accessible for most.
