Child Marriage Caricatures

Syrian Girls Illustrate Forced Marriages Captured by Save the Children

Save the Children's Rosie Thompson photographed a number of Syrian refugees who drew somber caricatures of forced marriages. According to the international non-governmental organization, the number of Syrian girls forced into child marriage has doubled since 2011. Some parents put their daughters into this predicament in order to 'protect' them from extreme violence and poverty.

So the NGO held an educational workshop for the girls at the Jordanian Za’atari refugee camp to raise awareness about the dangers of forced marriages. Based on what they learned but also experienced in their own communities, the young women illustrated these solemn situations in extremely powerful pictures.

In a report called 'To Young To Wed,' Save the Children further described the increasing issue of forced marriages among Syrian girls in Jordan.
