3D-Printed Bamboo Sculptures

'Flotsam & Jetsam' is the World's Largest 3D-Printed Structure

'Flotsam & Jetsam,' a new sculptural installation by SHoP Architects, has set the world record for the largest 3D-printed structure ever created. The sculpture, which was designed by SHoP and realized by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is currently on display at the Design Miami pavilion.

Measuring at 1,781 square feet of acreage, the sculpture is indeed massive. Further, this measurement doesn't take into account height -- though the sculpture has a varying shape, its tallest point is well over 20 feet high. That being said, Flotsam & Jetsam is surprisingly light, both in terms of its appearance and its actual weight. The structure is built out of biodegradable bamboo filaments, which are extremely strong yet naturally light. The latticed walls of Flotsam & Jetsam also reduce its total weight, since more than half of the surface area is empty space.
