The Flocks Wobot Builds Three-Dimensional Volumes Out of Wool

The Flocks Wobot by Dutch designer Christien Meindertsma is a robot that creates in three dimensions with wool in a similar way that 3D printers create structures layer by layer with filament. As Meindertsma describes, "The Wobot is a collaborative robot that makes it possible to build three-dimensional structures with wool industrially for the first time, without adding any material or using water in the felting process."

The kinds of structures that can be built with the Flocks Wobot manage to be soft and strong at the same time, and trials reveal that it tends to work best with coarse wool varieties that are naturally more durable. This innovative cobot was created with the aid of robotics company TFT, which worked with Meindertsma to develop a custom robot arm.
