Lattice-Like Vault Architecture

This Idea for the Flinders Street Station Connects Past to Present

As a part of the Flinders Street Station design competition, Herzog & de Meuron in partnership with HASSELL conceptualized an incredible vaulted network roof. The series of arcs are open, allowing room for the tracks underneath. Flinders Street Station is a main transportation hub in the city of Melbourne, Australia.

Their design also features a large amphitheater and open plaza for the public to congregate in. Upstairs there is also room for galleries, markets and other retail opportunities. The concourse is lit by the lattice-like structure of the vaults. The vault network would not compromise the original structure of the current building, which is considered a heritage site. The western entrance would be become the new main entrance where commuters can come into the redesigned station.
