The Fire Shelter is a unique contemporary structure but it almost looks as thought it might be a replication of an old indigenous or nomadic abode. Simon Hjermind Jensen designed it specifically for installation in this picturesque setting, just a 20 minute bike ride from Copenhagen.
The location, Sydhavnstippen, was once a seabed, then a landfill of construction materials. It was since given new life with soil and vegetation. The public are invited to celebrate the resilience of this changed landscape and to appreciate the joy of being outdoors. The unusual wooden oval structure protects a fire pit in the center to keep people warm in the winter. With flames lit, the Fire Shelter acts as a lovely orange lantern in the night.
