Liberating Feminist Illustrations

Carol Rossetti's Feminist Drawings Provoke Thought and Debate

The popularity of Carol Rossetti's feminist drawings surprised even her. The Brazilian graphic designer began the endeavor casually, posting the finished illustrations (and their accompanying stories) to her Facebook page. However, they have appeared to resonate with women all over the globe; a form of colorful, visual commentary that reaffirms women's bodily autonomy.

Rosetti explains, "It has always bothered me, the world's attempts to control women's bodies, behavior and identities. It's a kind of oppression so deeply entangled in our culture that most people don't even see it's there, and how cruel it can be."

Each of the images are accompanied by a powerful narrative, weaved in just a few choice words, of LGTBQ identity, body image, sexism, racism, ageism and ableism. The stories are inspired by the experiences of her friends, and women who have shared their stories with her over the Internet.
