'Fashioning Felt' Exhibition Brings Back the Ancient Crafting Material

Made by matting together wool fibers with humidity and friction, felting requires little technological expertise. It is thought to be one of the earliest techniques for making textiles and is a very versatile material.

The Fashioning Felt exhibition will feature contemporary uses of industrial felt in many fields including product design, fashion, architecture and home furnishings. On display will be amazing things such as two-dimensional carpets to three-dimensional environments with the aim of highlighting both the material and the designers themselves.

The exhibition will begin with historic examples of felts. It will be on view from March 6 – September 7, 2009 and is organized by Susan Brown, Assistant Curator of Textiles.
