Recycled Antique Alamanacs

Eco Farmers' Almanac Art

The Farmers' Almanac has been used as a guide post for weather forecasting for centuries (the first Farmers Almanac was published in 1818!) Its influence continues to be strong today, despite the availability of modern weather forecasting on TV, or up-to-the-minute updates on the internet.

The Farmers' Almanac, an annual North American publication, was just released this week, and the popularity of the search term "Farmers Almanac" proves its influence remains strong.

"It is famous for its long-range weather predictions and astronomical data, as well as its trademark blend of humor, trivia, and advice on gardening, cooking, fishing, and human-interest crusades," Wikipedia says. "Conservation, sustainable living, and simplicity are core values of the publication."

Since the Farmers' Almanac is so focused on the environment, and because green issues are increasingly valued by modern society, it wouldn't be surprising if the Farmers' Almanac spurred a bigger revival.

In the past it's been mostly gardeners and farmers who have used the Farmers' Almanac for information, but, with the increasingly bizarre weather, particularly natural disasters like Hurricane Gustav, a modern, higher tech Farmers' Almanac could evolve into a necessity to deal with global warming and climate change in the future.

This gallery shows crafts created by artists who were inspired by the Farmers' Almanac. They include items made of recycled antique almanacs and DIY family almanacs created by store owners at Etsy.com. The gallery also includes photos of antique Farmers' Almanacs for inspiration.
