Facebook is Using Face Recognition Technology to Help Users Control Images

In an effort to make its user experience safer and more controllable, Facebook has begun to roll out a new tool called 'Photo Review' that uses face recognition technology. The tool will analyze newly uploaded photos on the social media platform, and if that picture includes what Facebook's algorithm believes to be a picture of a user, it will notify them — regardless of whether they've been tagged.

Though Photo Review won't allow users to forcibly remove images with their faces in them, it gives users the option to include a tag, remove a tag, or contact the poster to request a removal.

Face recognition technology being rolled out by such a large platform is cause for privacy concern, so Facebook has enabled an opt out for all users with access to Photo Review. Facebook has stated that the tool will be available to most users other than those in Canada and the EU.
