Jihye Kang Experiments with Material Use in Her 'Purity' Collection

Interested in the refractive properties of acrylic and stainless steel, Hongik University graduate Jihye Kang experiments with materials in order to achieve the attention-captivating aesthetic of pieces in her 'Purity' furniture collection. The result is a series of modern silhouettes that are playfully illusory.

'Purity' is a 10-piece collection and it features side tables, chairs, stools, and partitions. After research into the properties of the materials, Seoul-based Jihye Kang concluded that "the refraction of the material was expressed best through the form of round rods." In addition, the designer wanted to combine the acrylic with another solid that would help magnify its refractive elements. She found that stainless steel was the best contender for the job of "bending and warping the reflective image."
