Evacuate by artist Kate MccGwire is a fantastical feather sculpture with a rather dark narrative. Installed in the kitchen of a historic mansion in Tatton Park in the UK, the piece resembles a giant serpent slithering in and out of an old wood stove.
What adds to the eeriness of Evacuate is that the sculpture itself is entirely covered in feathers of birds local to the park. It’s as if the spirits of these partridges, pigeons and quail have come back to haunt the kitchen and dominate the oven, which had once lead to the birds’ demises.
