Bodily Movement Video Installations

Bart Hess Created the Body-Bending Epistēmē Project for Aesop

Bart Hess is a Dutch conceptual artist and his latest project is the Epistēmē video installation for skincare label Aesop. The piece is much like Hess' classic work as it offers a mind-bending vision of the human body. Blurring the lines of what's real and what is unreal, technological elements are infused to show the human body as something that is potentially incomplete. The video spans out to over sixty meters and experiments on the line that separates reality and digital touchups. The word Epistēmē is an Ancient Greek term that translates to "knowledge and understanding," which is an indirect recall of Aesop's line of care products.

The Epistēmē video installation combines movement, form and color on top of an ambient soundscape by Ricky van Broekhoven. It exhibits the skin as something of a biological interface that lies between the body and the environment. Visually, paper, foil laters, film and watercolor are digitally enhanced to transform real movements and encounters to a video time-lapse sequence.
