Boomerang-Shaped Pools

This Refurbished Enclosed Pool Revives an Outdated 1970s Design

French architecture studio Urbane Kultur remodeled an existing enclosed pool and extended it to resemble a boomerang. The original pool was created along with another 200 similar facilities in France during the 1970s.

Titled 'Tournesol,' the swimming pool was redesigned in order to accommodate more swimmers in a less cramped space. The new space eliminated the old changerooms, which were located on the perimeter. In its place there were two new pools installed as well as a building extension to house the changerooms and offices.

The enclosed pool sustained much of the heritage and original architecture, including the vast natural light that was allowed in by large windows. In addition to the original structure, "a curved section of glazing was also added at the side, where the previous entrance was, offering a view of a new landscaped courtyard outside."
