'Elements of Place' is a photo series, captured by photographer Carolyn Marks Blackwood, that successfully documents and depicts the metamorphosis of the Hudson River over the course of several seasons. The photos consist of depictions of the river's ice forms in the winter, and are followed by shots taken in the spring. There are even photos of the clouds that float above the riverscape.
Blackwood's photos are captured in such a way that the depicted sections of the river look like cropped fragments rather than vast landscapes. Rich hues and eye-catching contrasts are a hallmark of this series. This is unsurprising given the influence of mid-century abstract expressionism on the photographer.
The Elements of Place photo series is currently on display at the Albany Institute of History and Art, where it will remain until September 7, 2014.
