Metaphorical Multigenerational Homes

EKAR Architects Designed a Home for a Large Family

In designing a home for a large, multigenerational family living in Bagkok, Thailand, EKAR Architects opted to create a home that not only houses the kin but also serves as a metaphor. The house, which is nestled in the Bang Phlat District, consists of several very distinct levels on top of one another, illustrating the progression of the different generations living within the home.

Though the levels look similar to one another on the interior, their exterior facades are dramatically different. The base level is clad with a white concrete, while the middle level is covered in a dark, striated marble pattern, and the highest level is surrounded by corrugated Corten steel. The differentiation on the exterior versus the similarity on the interior is a further metaphor for the family unit.
