A group of engineers and researchers working out of Carnegie Mellon University have gone ahead and developed a high-tech edible battery that is designed to provide power for any medical sensing and diagnostic technologies to carry out their work.
Ingestible medical gadgets aren't new, but the problem with them is that their batteries are not completely self and can contain toxic materials capable of causing harm to the patient. This is where this new edible battery comes in. This battery makes use of only naturally occurring substances such as melanin, which is found in skin, hair and eyes. Melanin's ability to easily bind and unlock with metallic ions makes it an excellent battery material.
