Gabriel Britton's EcoClear Provides a Sustainable Alternative

A prototype for an eco-conscious COVID-19 testing kit was designed by Gabriel Britton. Dubbed EcoClear, this lateral flow testing kit consists of bio-based recyclable plastic and a card. Through this innovation, the industrial design and technology student sought to answer the problem of waste generated during the pandemic.

COVID-19 has forced individuals to rely on single-use masks and gloves, as well as wasteful testing kits. Britton claimed that the testing kits in the UK alone "have created enough plastic waste to fill at least 19 Olympic swimming pools." It is estimated that EcoClear has a 20% weight reduction in contents, as well as a whopping 70% reduction in CO2 and energy use during production. As we continue to rely on tests to keep each other safe, an eco-conscious alternative is largely necessary.
