The First Disneyland Map Recently Sold at Auction

Disneyland is an icon — the chain of resorts all over the world have spread joy to children for decades — but it all started with a single Disneyland map. That original artifact of the resort's history had been squirreled away for nearly 60 years, but it recently sold at auction for a staggering $708,000, a testament to the intense emotional connection that generations of people have with Disneyland.

When Walt Disney first conceived of Disneyland in 1953, he had one of his artists draw a map that he used to help sell the idea to secure funding from investors at ABC. Two years later, the first Disneyland was built in Anaheim, California.

This cartographic piece of history was sold at the Van Eaton auction house in LA after a former Disney employee who was given it decided to offer the map to the public.
