Diotima's Collection Highlights Caribbean & Dance Hall Culture

Rachel Scott is the founder of Diotima, a clothing label that highlights Caribbean heritage and dance hall culture using fine Italian fabrics, which launched during the pandemic. The multifaceted designer aims to reflect bits of herself into her label's collection. The label takes its name from the ancient Greek priestess and philosopher Diotima of Mantinea.

Diotima's collection is crocheted by 12 women in Kingston, Jamaica, and some younger women learning the trade. Some notable pieces include the lace bodysuits, short 'Batty Rider' shorts, masculine Nineties-style oversized boxy jackets, and a macrame t-shirt finished with Swarovski crystals. The Winter '22 collection explores the Caribbean tradition of Junkanoo carnival, which was heavily influenced by reggae, ska, and dance hall music.
