David Esterly Creates Life-Like Sculptures Out of Limewood

David Esterly is perhaps the best wood carver in the world. He is certainly one of the only wood carvers creating original high-relief works today, as per Ellen Gamerman of Wall Street Journal's article. In fact, it is hard to believe that some of David Esterly's sculptures are actually sculptures. So incredibly detailed, they look like the violins, rosebuds and even iPod earbuds that they are made to look like.

Living in upstate New York, David Esterly recently opened his first Manhattan gallery earlier this month. Held at the W. M. Brady & Co., all of the work that is on display have been carved out of limewood. Starting with a pencil sketch, David Esterly then fleshes out his drawing on Adobe Illustrator before making a mark on the wood itself.
