These Daniel Ribar Photographs are Curious

Photographer Daniel Ribar has shot a series of photographs that capture an elusive, surreal quality often found, but rarely focused on in everyday life.

In many of the photographs, Daniel Ribar depicts out-of-place objects set in pastoral, peaceful scenes, producing a distinctly jarring effect. In this respect they are reminiscent of a Magritte painting: an apple and a man in bowler hat are, on their own, not very strange but when that apple is perpetually obscuring the man’s face the impression one gets is curious. In this way, they are in best traditions of surrealism.

Not all the scenes depict out of place objects however. Some of these Daniel Ribar photographs portray merely a scene. Still, the angles the photographer emphasizes and the textures he focuses on conspire to produce something curious in each scene.
