London-based photographer Daniel Garcia recently shot a series of photographs titled 'Red,' that depict a flower magnified in high-definition. From this perspective, it looks less like a flower and more like something one might see through the lens of a high-powered telescope.
In many of the photographs, petals expand in streaks of crimson light like star-lit gas exploding slowly in the darkness of space. It is striking that this otherworldly aesthetic can be achieved with such a ubiquitous and earth-bound object as a flower.
Garcia aptly illustrates how key perspective is to experience. From afar, flowers are simply splotches of color, as captured so well by many impressionist painters. From a few feet, they are quite clearly plants. Yet, with a sufficiently high-powered lens and enough photographic skill, the flowers are other-worldly explorations of color and form.
