This Home Was Restored After It Was Damaged by an Earthquake

Designer Greg Haji Joannides recently completed the restoration of a beautiful island home that was damaged by an earthquake. When a natural disaster strikes a city, some buildings are damaged beyond repair. This designer used historic photographs to restore a 17th-century home to its former glory.

Joannides was tasked with restoring the interior of an earthquake-damaged home located on the Greek island of Nisyros. The 17th-century house was severely damaged in 1933 when it was struck by a devastating earthquake. Although the structure was renewed, Joannides was asked to restore the interior to its former glory. Joannides relied on historic photographs and traditional materials to bring the home back to life. As Joannides explains, "The inspiration behind this design was to keep as much as possible of the original way the Nisyrians would build houses."

The restoration of the 'Sterna Nisyros Residence' demonstrates how architects can rebuild following a natural disaster.
