SuperMeat Plans to Grow Chicken Meat Without Killing One Animal

Israeli foodtech startup, SuperMeat, is developing an alternative to slaughtering chickens: cultured meat.

SuperMeat has stated that its chicken meat is cruelty and vegan-free and is created without the use of animal serum. Using the cells of chickens, it is able to grow meat outside of the animals body in a controlled environment.

According to the company, current chicken farming methods produces 18% of greenhouse emissions. It also noted that recent studies have indicated over 70% of chicken meat in the United States has unsafe levels of arsenic and antibiotic resistant bacteria. Cultured meats could prove to be a sustainable and healthier form of meat farming.

In the next two years, the company is hoping to build the technology required to produce one chicken breast. In order to do this it will be crowdfunding the project on Indiegogo.
