Television host, wildlife expert and conservationist Steve Irwin, a.k.a the Crocodile Hunter, has inspired the names of two new species since his death in 2006. The first was a turtle, ‘Elseya irwini’ and now a rare species of tree snail is to be called ‘Crikey steveirwini.’
According to Discovery News, the Crikey steveirwini was found in the mountainous regions of north Queensland’s wet tropics near Cairns. Scientist Dr. John Stanisic of Queensland Museum, who named the snail Crikey steveirwini, stated, "It was the khaki color that immediately drew the connection to the late Crocodile Hunter."
