Laura McQuarrie, Trend Hunter (INTERVIEW)

McQuarries Chats about Creative Boutique Designs

Trend Hunter Laura McQuarrie is an expert in the field of interior design, so it's no wonder she was drawn to the creative boutique design for Risk fashion in Warsaw, Poland. This innovative interior design transformed a normal boutique into an upside-down store reminiscent of the rabbit hole down which Alice falls in Alice in Wonderland.

When she's not drooling over the coolest interior designs out there, Laura loves updating her thriving Pinterest board, climbing to the top of the social media charts, and hitting up free Ludacris concerts.

1.Describe your favorite trend.

This trend is called ‘Upside-Down Boutiques,’ and it is a Polish shop for the fashion brand, Risk, made in Warsaw. The interior design basically takes the idea of inside-out fashion, and literally creates a boutique that is upside-down. What you’re walking onto is this wooden floor, and you look up and you see that there’s an inflatable couch on the ceiling, there’s a lamp and a pair of shoes, and everything looks like it’s been flipped on its head. It reminds me of when Alice is falling down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland, and everything is just floating around her and it’s really surreal and kind of dream-like.

2.What did you do before coming to Trend Hunter? What prompted you to apply for this internship?

Before coming to Trend Hunter, I went to school for interior design. I’ve worked in branding, I’ve done several internships related to design and social media, so I really liked that Trend Hunter brought all of those things together, letting me use all those skills.

3.Describe the atmosphere at Trend Hunter. What does it feel like when you walk through the door?

Right when you walk through the door you can tell that it’s super creative, and a really friendly and positive environment. Everybody’s really great and supportive, and that’s one of the things I like most about Trend Hunter.

4.How do you go about writing a trend? How do you find trends to write about?

When I start looking for a trend, I look for stuff related to design, since that’s what I’m most interested in, and I like writing about weird fashions as well. To look for trends, I start by developing a really good RSS feed, so I can have eyes everywhere and keep a pulse on what’s buzzing on the internet.

5.What’s one of the most interesting things you’ve learned since starting at Trend Hunter?

One of the most interesting things I’ve learned here is how to develop a personal brand through social media. Before coming to Trend Hunter, I was not at all active on Twitter, or Facebook, so this has been a really great experience learning how to promote your work and develop your own brand voice.

6.What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I wanted to be an astronaut for a long time when I was a kid, until I was turned off by the fact that your head might explode if your helmet came off in outer space.

7.What’s been your biggest accomplishment so far?

I don’t want to be cliché and say getting this internship, but I’m pretty proud of that. I was super nervous about hearing back because I knew it was a really competitive process, and I was quite happy when I found out that I was going to be joining the team.

8.Any last thoughts on Trend Hunter?

Trend Hunter’s an awesome place to work. The people here come from such diverse backgrounds, and are able to take away skills that can be used in any field.
